What’s the Difference Between a Prebiotic and Probiotic?

They sound so similar, right? Prebiotics and probiotics work together to restore your gut’s microbiome to a healthy bacterial balance to keep digestion, immunity, cardiovascular and brain functions running smoothly–like a super tag team in your body. But it’s important to remember prebiotics and probiotics are definitely not the same.

Prebiotics are dietary fiber that feed the good bacteria in your gut. Our bodies can’t digest complex carbs so they pass through the digestive system and become superfood for bacteria. Examples of prebiotic foods include garlic, onions, asparagus, and bananas.

Probiotics are actual live strains of bacteria that can restore gut flora and good bacteria. They can be found in fermented foods like yogurt, kimchee, kombucha, and sauerkraut and supplements.

Choosing the right supplement

When choosing a probiotic supplement, it’s crucial to pick the right one. It’s an issue of efficacy. Standard probiotics are extremely volatile—many of them die before they even reach your gut. And almost all are sensitive to their environments, requiring large doses to survive the long journey to the colon where they are the most effective. Here’s what to look for:

  • Safety and quality
  • Specific strain of bacteria
  • How do you take it?
  • How do you store it?
